IEEE Gives Its Blessing to BluetoothBy Michael Foley
IEEE licensed wireless technology from the Bluetooth SIG, Inc., to adapt and copy a portion of the Bluetooth specification as base material for IEEE Standard 802.15.1-2002. The approved IEEE 802.15.1 standard is fully compatible with the Bluetooth v1.1 specification. Bluetooth is a short-range wireless technology designed as a replacement for cables and wires between devices. Bluetooth technology defines specifications for small-form-factor, low-cost wireless radio communications among notebook computers, personal digital assistants, cellular phones and other portable, handheld devices, and connectivity to the Internet.
The 802.15.1 standard was developed by a subcommittee of the IEEE's broader 802 Standards Committee, which is working on a number of specifications for wireless networks, including the much more commonly known 802.11 wireless network system used for high-speed access in homes and offices.
The IEEE standard also added a major clause on Service Access Points. The IEEE-SA also plans to further develop the 802.15.1 SDL model source to support the standard.
