In-Stat: Tablet MIBs annual sales to reach $4.1B by 2014 Bernard Cole Scottsdale, Az. - The market for semiconductors going inside tablet PCs -including Apple Inc.'s much publicized iPad - could be worth $4.1 billion by 2014, according to market research firm In-Stat. "Tablets have quickly become a high priority for competitors across the value chain, including mobile operators," said Jim McGregor, In-Stat analyst, in a statement. He said the 50 million units of various tablets could ship in 2014. The firm said that based on bill-of-materials (BOM) estimates, initial pricing of mainstream tablets should be in the $400 to $500 range. Apple's iPad, launched with great fanfare on Jan. 27, is priced starting at $499. The device will be available next month. Sensing an opportunity, number of chip firms brought out hardware targeted at tablet PCs at the Consumer Electronics Show early this year, including Freescale Semiconductor Inc., Nvidia Corp. and Qualcomm Inc.
