Samsung Webthru SWC-160

by

The thing that catches your attention immediately with the Samsung Webthru SWC-160 Dome Web Camera is how it simplifies remote video monitoring. The all-in-one system eliminates the need for seperate PCs and frame grabber cards for transferring video across the network. Installation is as simple as assigning it an IP address and plugging in the network and power connections. Since it sits directly on the network, any system with proper authentication can use a web browser to view the images taken from the SWC-160. The 160 is the newest web camera in the Webthru product line. These cameras are on par with similar cameras made by Axis communications. The SWC-160 ups the anti by packaging the camera into a dome configuration for 360 degrees of panning rotation.

The dome camera runs on an embedded Linux distribution and comes with 16 MB of DRAM and 8 MB of non-volatile Flash memory storage. 6MB of the Flash storage can be used to store user application files such as web pages and image files to cusomize the web site for a given location. The camera has a built-in web server and a 10BaseT Ethernet (RJ45) network connection. The camera has enough resources to allow up to 100 simutaneous connections and unlike PCs has been designed to be lightweight (2.1Kg) with reliability and robustness.

Web cameras are qualified by its camera and the throughput rate of the images. The SWC-160 holds it own with image sensor that has 1/4" CCD and 410,000 pixels with back lighting compensation. It has the capability to zoom 128x (16x Optical & 8x Digital) the actual size. The Lens has an aperture range of F1.4 ~2.7, a focal length range of f3.9mm ~ 62.4mm and allows auto or manual focus. Images are compressed in the the Wavelet format which has a higher compression rate than standard JPEG. This helps provide a transer rate of 30 frames per second.

The camera can be remotely administered through the web pages. This allows users to adjust the pan and tilt controls and the focus remotely across the web. The dome allows 360 degrees of camera panning rotation and 90 degrees of tilt with 64 preset positions.

Along with the web server, the camera also includes FTP for transfering files and Email (SMTP) for sending images and alarm events. Motion detection modes work in conjunction with email to send alarm emails upon motion detection. Images can be included in the alarm emails to show a snapshot of what caused the alarm. Password authentication is used to allow access to the video and control pages. The system defines up to five levels of user web page access based upon login IDs. Additional security features are IP address filtering and Image data encryption.
