OEMs can now integrate the SmartStack for Ethernet into any piece of equipment, converting it into a stand-alone client that can be connected to any Ethernet LAN, thanks to eDevice. SmartStack for Ethernet is currently available for Analog Device's digital signal processor (DSP), the ADI-2185.

SmartStack for Ethernet combines both the Media Access Control (MAC) layer and the Internet TCP/IP protocols on a DSP. Included in the software is the Address Resolution Protocol (ARP). This allows the MAC layer to associate the Ethernet physical addresses with the IP address assigned to the LAN.

EDevice's software requires external flash memory and a physical interface to connect the DSP to the RJ45 connector. It easily interfaces with other applications via a simple, AT-like command set running on the DSP.

Unused power on the processor can also be utilized to execute user-specified application code. SmartStack for Ethernet is targeted toward low-cost Internet Access Devices (IAD) for offices, medical facilities, shop floors, educational institutions, "smart" buildings, and even homes equipped with broadband access.

A complete reference design, including everything from the PHY component to the upper Internet protocol layers (SMTP, POP3, FTP, Telnet, and HTTP), is available. SmartStack for Ethernet costs $11.50 per unit in quantity.
