Calling All Java Developers: Enter the Developer Challenge

Motorola and Nextel will co-sponsor the Motorola/Nextel Developer Challenge, held June 4-6, 2001 during Sun Microsystems' JavaOne developer conference in San Francisco. Developers will compete to win a BMW Z3 2.5i roadster and Motorola i85s handsets with Nextel service.

This competition challenges developers to create innovative local and network-aware applications using Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME) technology.

The Developer Challenge will take place at Metreon, adjacent to the Moscone Center in San Francisco, and is open to developers registered for JavaOne. Those participating in the contest will be able to use free development tools, including software developer kits (SDKs), integrated development environments (IDEs), a phone emulator, and personalized on-site technical support.

Entries will be judged on overall creativity, originality, usability, practicality, and robustness. The grand prize is a 2001 BMW Z3 2.5i roadster, as well as a pair of Motorola i85s handsets with one year of service from Nextel. The second-place winner will receive a pair of Motorola i85s wireless phones with one year of service from Nextel, and a portable DVD player. The third-place winner will receive a pair of Motorola i85s phones and one year of service.

The competition runs from 5:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on June 4 and 5; and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on June 6. Applications must be developed on-site and during contest hours. Seating is limited, and is on a first-come, first served basis. Each contestant will receive a special “survival kit” and refreshments. If development gets too stressful, free chair massages should help alleviate the tension. The final presentation and awards ceremony will be held at Metreon's SoMa Room at 7:00 p.m. on June 6, during which time six finalists will be announced and will present their applications to the judges.
