WatchGuard Technologies, Inc. introduced its next generation of Firebox Internet security appliances at the NetWorld + Interop Conference in Las Vegas. The Firebox III family consists of the Firebox 2500 and Firebox 4500. The Firebox 2500 is an enterprise-class firewall capable of supporting up to 5,000 authenticated users, while the Firebox 4500 provides firewall services at wire speed (100 megabits per second).

The Firebox III introduces new features that maximize performance, such as route-through virtual private networking (VPN). This VPN technology enables organizations to pass traffic through existing VPN tunnels to create additional VPN connections with other Fireboxes on the network, rather than building distinct VPN tunnels for every pair of Fireboxes.

The Firebox System includes the Firebox appliance, firewall and VPN protection, management software, and the LiveSecurity Service. Coupled with WatchGuard's VPN Manager software, the new Firebox III family of appliances delivers a solution for managing VPN connections between hundreds of sites.

WatchGuard VPN Manager's drag and drop configuration tool allows users to rapidly configure and deploy the VPN connections from a central location, simplifying the management process. In addition, for customers with critical VPN deployments, WatchGuard has expanded its customer service solutions to include LiveSecurity Gold Service, offering 24x7 technical support and one-hour response times.

The Firebox 2500 and 4500 run on 500MHz processors and 64-bit bus architecture with 197 Mbps firewall throughput (packet filter mode). The 4500 offers 256 MB RAM and 100 Mbps VPN/3DES throughput; the 2500 provides 128 MB RAM and 45 Mbps VPN/3DES throughput, supporting up to 5,000 authenticated users.

All Firebox III products include WatchGuard Control Center, the WatchGuard Security Suite, and a one-year subscription to the LiveSecurity Service. Suggested list price in the U.S. is $7,490 for the Firebox 2500 and $9,990 for the Firebox 4500. Both products will be available in late-May, 2001.
