Maverick Shrinks Cost of Internet Audio Players

Internet audio players just got a boost with the Cirrus Logic Maverick EP7409 for Internet audio players. Designed to bring the price of flash-based players below $100 retail, the EP7409 almost doubles the length of time portable players can play music on a set of batteries.

The new Maverick processor offers the market key features for 64 MB players, including support for multiple audio standards, MP3, WMA, and ACC, and MaverickKey security technology.

The processor is able to bring flash-based Internet audio players to a lower price point through its high degree of integration and reduction in the number of parts required to build a player.

The integration in the new Maverick processor includes:

  • Cirrus Logic's TrueDigital Class D headphone amplifier
  • ARM7 CPU
  • 24-bit Audio DSP
  • MaverickKey security technology
  • 104K bytes of SRAM
  • 60K bytes of ROM

The new Internet audio processor was also engineered to double the amount of time portable players can play music -- now up to 20 hours. This Maverick processor reduces not only the chip's power consumption, but overall system power consumption as well.

For example, in one Internet audio player, this processor cuts the power requirement in half, from 360 milliwatts for a first-generation player to 170 milliwatts for the third generation of the same player.

The TrueDigital Class D headphone amplifier is 90% efficient, versus linear amplifiers that are only 40% to 50% efficient. By minimizing the system power consumption, the EP7409 processor makes portable Internet audio players run longer, giving consumers more time to listen to digital music. This is good news for manufacturers that have seen players with longer playing capabilities surge in popularity.

The EP7409 Internet audio microprocessor will be sampling in Q3 and is expected to ramp up for production in Q4. The new Maverick processor is priced at $15.85 for a 128-pin QFP or $16.35 for a 12mm 144-pin BGA in quantities of 10,000 through distributors.
