Odyssey Attaches Palms to EnterprisesBy Michael Foley Odyssey Software's ViaXML allows Palm devices to interact with enterprise level software. ViaXML is based on open XML standards and uses standard HTTP/HTTPS Internet protocols.ViaXML for Palm OS enables direct access to enterprise data from the Palm OS platform via open standard XML-based mobile Web services technology. ViaXML allows developers to implement distributed enterprise applications that communicate directly with Palm OS devices. ViaXML is a mobile and wireless application framework that enables Web services to be exposed and called over the public Internet and corporate intranet. It uses open Internet standards including XML, HTTP, and HTTPS. ViaXML supports both online and disconnected applications through IP-based networks, like Ethernet, 802.11b wireless LAN, and wireless WAN networks, such as CDPD, GSM, GPRS, and Palm.Net. A ViaXML-enabled application communicates with Microsoft .NET platform and other Web service strategies powered by IBM, Oracle, and Sun Microsystems. Seamless direct peer-to-peer interoperability is also available for mobile applications. Support for other platforms and message formats will be available directly from Odyssey Software later in 2001. ViaXML for the Palm OS platform, Pocket PC, and Windows CE is available immediately from Odyssey Software.
