Toshiba Plays with PDAsBy The GENIO e550 represents Toshiba's foray into the Pocket PC market. It integrates a package of productivity tools supported by an Intel StrongARM 206 MHz processor and 32MB of main memory. The high-end GENIO e550/MD adds a 1 GB microdrive to this platform, giving enough room to store downloads of both business and entertainment files. The GENIO e550 will be launched in Japan on August 20, and the GENIO e550/MD will follow at the end of September. The GENIO e series runs the Microsoft Windows for Pocket PC operating system. The CPU and the provision of 32MB of DRAM memory assure high-speed processing of software optimized for the Pocket PC OS, including Pocket versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet Explorer, and the Windows Media Player, all of which are integrated into the GENIO e series. Data synchronization and downloads from PCs are supported by a USB cradle. With the GENIO e series, Toshiba draws on the technologies the company has used in the development of portable PCs and cellular phones, including high-density mounting technology for multi-layer circuit boards. The result is light and stylish, a slim 17.5mm, 180 gram package with battery that integrates the two latest advances in expansion slots: an SD slot for the Secure Digital Input-Output card and SD memory card, and a CF-II slot for CompactFlash cards. Toshiba and numerous third-party developers support these slots with diverse applications, including memory cards, PHS data communication cards, modem cards, Bluetooth cards, and barcode readers. Other cards, GPS and wireless LAN modules among them, will come to market soon. The new GENIO e combines high performance with a comfortable user interface, both indoors and outdoors, thanks to a bright, clear 3.5-inch front-light reflective TFT LCD supporting 65,536 colors and 240 x 320 pixel resolution. The display is highly suited for applications such as playback of MPEG-4 video sources on Windows Media Player Ver. 7.1. The GENIO e series will be displayed at Wireless Japan 2001, to be held at the Tokyo International Exhibition Center from July 17 to July 19, 2001. Link: |
