Ishoni Networks' Lightning Access Initiative is a platform that includes silicon, software, and a development kit for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to build broadband access devices such as integrated access devices (IADs), residential gateways, modems, and routers. Ishoni recently introduced the first two products in its family of Gateway-on-a-Chip solutions designed specifically to give Voice-over-Broadband (VoB) and Voice-over-IP (VoIP) manufacturers an integrated processing solution at a reduced cost. The Lightning Access Initiative will build on this by integrating networking and security features for SOHOs into the platform.

As part of the Lightning Access Initiative, Ishoni Networks has designed a fully functional IAD prototype for its developers' kit. The prototype supports an industry standard full-rate DMT ADSL modem, four voice-over-DSL lines, two 10/100 Ethernet interfaces, and one USB interface. The prototype design also includes Ishoni's Broadband Engine processor and software products that provide networking, SNMP and Web-based management, voice processing, and connectivity to leading voice-gateway solutions.

The Ishoni Broadband Engine uses a FlexibleWAN engine architecture that allows it to support both cell and frame-based WAN connectivity. The FlexibleWAN engine can also be field-upgraded to adapt to changes in the communication protocol standards. The engine supports direct interface to xDSL, cable, and broadband wireless modem chips. The SoC has an integrated MIPS processor core and includes DSP functionality for voice applications. Built-in security features contain an integrated Hardware Encryption Engine with IPSec support for wire-speed VPN applications.

Other integrated features include:

  • Two serial ports with synchronous, asynchronous, and HDLC support.
  • Two integrated Ethernet MAC controllers with MII interfaces to support 10/100BT switched LAN connections.
  • Integrated USB device interface.
  • Integrated PCI interface, supporting Host, Master, and Slave modes.
  • General Purpose I/O interfaces: SPI, I2C, and Motel.

Multiple Gateway-on-Chips can be combined together to increase performance. Up to 4 Ishoni Broadband Engine processor chips can be cascaded to support 16 voice ports.
