Merlin Is Magical Wireless GSM/GPRS for ComputingBy Though it will not be available until the fourth quarter of this year, the Merlin G201 GPRS (General Packet Radio Services) 900/1800 Wireless PC Card Modem for GSM/GPRS wireless networks should cause quite a stir among those who would like to wirelessly connect not only handheld devices, but full-fledged computers, too. The Merlin G201 from Novatel Wireless will enable voice and high-speed wireless data access to the Internet, email, and corporate databases at speeds up to 53.6 kbps in GPRS coverage areas, and up to 14.4 kbps via circuit-switched data in GSM coverage areas. These coverage areas are mainly concentrated in Europe and Asia. The Merlin G201 will work with all computing devices that feature a Type II PC Card slot and Microsoft Windows 98/ME/2000/Pocket PC operating systems. Equipped with DataNet software, Merlin G201 provides users with the ability to automatically or manually connect to the GPRS network, allowing them to control the modem's usage, airtime, and power consumption. The card's Short Message Service (SMS) capabilities allow users send and receive quick text messages. The Merlin G201 uses the Microsoft dial-up connection that enables users to control their connections to the network, providing one-step connection and saving battery life and time. Standard GSM voice capabilities will also be offered with the Merlin G201. Calls are originated on the laptop or Pocket PC.
