Philips Speech Processing enables VoCon, their established speech recognition software, to function on the Intel StrongARM SA-1110 application processor. Philips also announced planned reinforcement for the new Intel XScale microarchitecture in an effort to expand platform support for speech recognition.

The software is targeted towards automotive, mobile/wireless, and consumer electronics products. Philips demonstrated several speech recognition applications on the Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC, including continuous-digit dialing, command control functions, and large-vocabulary dictation.

Speech recognition technology requires scalable processing solutions that have the ability to accelerate processor performance on demand. Both the Intel StrongARM processor and the XScale have the required multimedia capabilities and power management for speech processing, and at the same time, they are designed for battery-operated applications.

VoCon software is a modular speech recognition package. It is noise-robust and speaker-independent and/or speaker-dependent. It includes whole-word or phoneme-based recognition and word spotting. VoCon is available in several languages including US and UK English, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Italian, and others.

VoCon adds voice-control to applications, including command execution, name and continuous-digit dialing, natural number dialing, address book management, and menu navigation.
