RealPlayer Goes MobileBy Michael Foley RealNetworks, Inc. is supplying a jolt to the mobile iAppliance market with its release of RealPlayer Mobile. RealPlayer Mobile allows mobile devices to play similar multimedia content as desktop PCs since it offers the same basic functionality as its full-featured cousin RealPlayer, but is tailored for resource-limited mobile devices. RealPlayer Mobile's first release will be on the Symbian OS in the Nokia 9210 Communicator. More versions will be available to support other mobile platforms. RealSystem Mobile Server and RealSystem Mobile Gateway are products from the RealSystem iQ family that are optimized for RealPlayer Mobile. RealSystem Mobile Server enables operators to host both live and on-demand (time shifted) content locally and serve it via wireless networks. RealSystem Mobile Gateway acts as a streaming media proxy-cache, pulling content from RealSystem Servers (mobile or wireline) and rebroadcasting that content efficiently over wireless networks. RealSystem Mobile Gateway enables operators to provide access to the broad range of digital media content currently available on the Internet to their subscribers.
