Even though Microsoft has announced it will not provide support for Bluetooth in its product line, its Embedded and Appliance Group will utilize third party components to integrate Bluetooth into Windows CE's next release. Socket Communications, Inc., is working with Microsoft to ensure Socket's Bluetooth CompactFlash (CF) Card and embedded Bluetooth modules will be supported on future devices running Talisker.

Microsoft announced the second beta release of Talisker for developers Aug. 13, 2001, which includes support for Socket's Bluetooth products. In addition, the beta release includes support for Socket's broad family of plug-in I/O card products.Socket's Bluetooth Card is a CompactFlash I/O Type I adapter. The card is low powered for use in battery-operated devices.

Socket Communications is also offering four different Bluetooth Software Development Kits:

  • Bluetooth Card SDK -- Provides a Bluetooth card development solution with point-to-point connectivity and support for 4 Bluetooth profiles: Dial-up Networking (DUN), Service Discovery, General Access, and Serial (cable replacement)
  • LAN Access SDK- A combined Developer Kit between Socket & Axis Communications
  • Embedded Developers Kit - Provides customized OEM support through the Socket Bluetooth Embedded Module solution
  • Platform Builder 3.0 Program- Offers the ability for Embedded Windows CE developers to design Socket Bluetooth products into their reference platforms based upon Windows CE Platform Builder 3.0

Expected availability is in September 2001.
