Actiontec Electronics, Inc., is building a USB and Ethernet enabled Home DSL Modem. The dual USB/Ethernet interface offers consumers high-speed Internet access, up to 25 times faster than conventional 56 Kbps modems. Better yet, it allows the average consumer to install DSL on a phone line without assistance.

The Actiontec USB/Ethernet Home DSL Modem comes with everything consumers need to install DSL themselves, including four microfilters, and eliminates the need for special wiring or installation by phone company representatives.

Users simply connect the modem to an Ethernet or USB port, insert the microfilters between the home's phones and phone jacks, and install the software. Further simplifying the set up process, modem installation is completely plug-and-play when used with USB ports.

This device can be used as the Internet gateway for home and small office networks, or it can work with established wireless or Ethernet home gateways. With instant-on 24/7 support, it runs simultaneously voice and data traffic over the phone line, enabling the modem to operate without interfering with ordinary telephone conversations and eliminating annoying dial-up delays and busy signals.

Built using programmable high-speed DSP (Digital Signal Processor) technology, it offers versatility and easy upgrading. Users can download the latest software from the Internet, ensuring access to the highest speed services and compatibility with the latest standards as they become available.

The Actiontec USB/Ethernet Home DSL Modem requires a 200 MHz or faster Pentium-class computer with 32 MB RAM, CD-ROM drive, and available Ethernet or USB connector. The modem includes all required cables hardware and software, including microfilters, and installation software. Use of the modem for broadband access for a home or small office networking requires ISP support for multiple user access.

The Actiontec USB/Ethernet Home DSL Modem is scheduled for release in September 2001 at an MSRP of $189.95. Through the USB interface, it can be setup with Windows 98/98 SE, Windows Me, and Windows 2000. The Ethernet interface is compatible with all major operating systems.
