Espial Escape 4.8, a Java browser with scalable configuration capabilities, can be setup to match the memory requirements of a wide range of devices. Escape 4.8 allows developers to selectively disable support for certain Internet standards so that browsers can be tailored to run in very resource-constrained designs or offer full functionality for other more powerful devices.

One of Escape 4.8's target markets is set-top boxes. Escape can be configured to work across a complete product line from low-end units to high-end units, without making time-consuming programming changes for each device.

With the latest release of Escape, a developer may disable JavaScript or go with a completely scaled down compact configuration that provides HTML-only support to those very resource-limited devices. All this is possible using as little as one-third the memory of the full configuration while still providing a rich end-user experience comparable to that of PC browsing. With no programming changes, the same core browser can then be configured to offer high-end browsing functionality including HTML 4.0, JavaScript, CSS, XML, and multimedia capabilities for other more powerful devices. This flexible configuration is an absolute requirement for interactive TV (iTV) designs because set-top box OEMs must meet the demands of a diverse user population with different functionality requirements.

Espial has demonstrated extensibility by adding support for WML, XSLT, and online help to the latest version of Escape. Escape 4.8 also maintains the features popular with the television market, such as fit to screen-width, minimum font sizes (font flooring), extensive zoom controls, and pointerless (2D) navigation, making it by far the most versatile release of Escape to date.

Espial Escape 4.8 is currently shipping. Free evaluation copies are available for download.
