Century Embedded Technologies has added to the variety of Linux platforms available with the release of PIXIL, a commercial-ready embedded Linux operating environment and development suite optimized for small footprint, smart flat-panel devices. PIXIL leverages technologies from standards-based embedded Linux for rapidly developing and deploying next generation handhelds and wireless devices.

PIXIL provides a suite of embedded software for advanced Internet appliances that works across multiple form factors and includes full support for wireless communications, networking, Web browsing, power management, and GUIs. PIXIL's modular framework offers fully optimized, pre-defined components for ready-to-use and easily customized applications, while eliminating the need to combine individual components into one package. Century's PIXIL delivers applications quickly, streamlining the process of deploying reliable, secure, and scalable next generation applications. PIXIL-supported architectures include x86, PowerPC, StrongARM, MIPS, and SH.

Featuring an application and development suite, PIXIL's runtime environment is scalable and can meet a range of high and low-end resource requirements. PIXIL's framework offers a combination of internal design capabilities, device drivers, software development, and management tools for complete support throughout the entire product lifecycle.

PIXIL offers scalability through its support for graphical windowing environments, such as Microwindows and the X Window System. A standard application suite features a Personal Information Manager (PIM); Internet connectivity options, including an enhanced version of the ViewML Internet Browser; email client; and multimedia capabilities.

A desktop suite includes a complementary set of applications that synchronize data between the desktop and device. The desktop PIM suite runs under Linux, Unix, Windows 95/98/Me, and Windows NT/2000. Finally, PIXIL Software Developers Kit (SDK) allows easy modification and enhancement of existing applications. To expedite development time, a target emulation environment is included that enables the developer to create, test, and execute applications on the desktop without having the actual target device. Source code to all open source projects is provided.

PIXIL is currently available directly from Century Embedded Technologies. Each component of the PIXIL Operating Environment can be sold or licensed separately.
