Lineo, Inc., is delivering tools to identify legal issues involved with developing open source code software in accordance with GPL (General Public License). The Lineo Embedix GPL Compliance Toolset provides a mechanism for OEMs and embedded developers to combine the benefits of both open source and proprietary software in the same embedded solution.

"The Lineo Embedix GPL Compliance Toolset was built to guide embedded systems developers through the extensive maze of software code license compliance issues," said Dan Montierth, general manager of the Lineo tools product line. "The GPL Compliance Toolset gives knowledge to the decision maker, whether that person is a developer or the company general counsel, to help make an educated decision to release code to the open source community or to keep it proprietary."

When initiated against the developer's software project, the GPL Compliance Toolset identifies source code pulled from more than 40 common licenses via the following quick and comprehensive process:

  • Code Review Wizard evaluates developer coding habits and areas of exposure.
  • Library Check scans all executables and used libraries for associated libraries and generates a report of the findings.
  • License Report Wizard generates a report of all licenses used within the project.

The GPL (General Public License) Compliance Toolset will be available in September 2001.
