QUALCOMM has demonstrated video streaming with its new CDMA2000 1X/Bluetooth connection. The demo used a third-generation (3G) CDMA2000 1X handset based on the QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies (QCT) MSM5100 Mobile Station Modem (MSM) chipset and system software solution connected through a laptop via a Bluetooth dial-up network. The MSM5100 chip provided video streaming rates exceeding 144 kilobits per seconds (Kbps) over the wide area network (WAN), with the Bluetooth connection providing comparable data rates over the wireless personal area network (WPAN).

The MSM5100 chipset provides wireless communications using CDMA2000, a wireless 3G communications standard. Data rates of 153.6 Kbps on both the forward and reverse links simultaneously exceed the ITU specifications for 3G and offer 50 percent more standby time and up to double the capacity of IS-95 equipment. Bluetooth provides a bridge to existing data networks, a peripheral interface, and a mechanism to form small, private ad hoc groupings of connected devices away from fixed network infrastructures.

The MSM5100 chipset includes:

  • Support for Removable User Identity Module (R-UIM) cards
  • Multimedia Card (MMC) interface
  • Bluetooth connectivity capabilities
  • Qtunes MP3 audio player
  • CMX Compact Multimedia Extension (CMX) software

The MSM5100 solution allows manufacturers to produce 3G CDMA2000 1X handsets with multimedia features. The MSM5100 chipset incorporates QCT's Wireless Internet Launchpad suite, enabling a broad range of new terminal products, applications, and Internet services, including the gpsOne position location solution and Bluetooth, as well as multimedia features such as Qtunes Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG-1) Layer-3 (MP3) player software and Compact Media Extension (CMX) Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI)-based multimedia software. The MSM5100 device also supports the Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless (BREW) applications platform.
