Intersil integrates an access point-on-a-chip and releases a reference design for wireless networking by combining an ARM9-based Medium Access Controller (MAC) with an Open Source Linux operating system.

With the Linux operating system, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) can add applications or custom features to differentiate their products and add value. The PRISM ISL36356A integrated access point (AP) reference design is available for wireless connectivity for homes, small offices, enterprises, and public areas such as hotels and airports.

The kit includes:

  • Reference design
  • Open Source Linux operating system
  • Customization instructions
  • Configuration software
  • Firmware upgrade mechanism
  • End-user documentation
  • Manufacturing test tools

Using this design, manufacturers can easily develop a layered security system, Internet sharing, NAT, DHCP, user tracking, remote access and control, and other features available through open source repositories.

PRISM is an integrated, low-cost solution for designing Wi-Fi-compliant, embedded wireless networking capability into small, portable computing devices such as laptop PCs, personal digital assistants (PDAs), home gateways, and next generation Web tablet Internet appliance devices.

The chip is optimized for high data rate (11 Mbps) performance. PRISM-based products provide users with wireless access to networks and the Internet for fast and efficient transmission of data, video, and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services.
