Proxim Supports 802.11b for Its New Home GatewayBy Michael Foley Proxim made available the Skyline 802.11b wireless products for small businesses and schools. The Skyline Wireless Broadband Gateway allows users to share a single high-speed cable or DSL connection with both wired and wireless computers. The gateway is based on the IEEE 802.11b standard and transmits data at rates up to 11 Mbps. The Skyline Wireless Broadband Gateway combines a 4 port 10/100 switch for local Ethernet connections, an integrated 802.11b wireless access point for local wireless connections, and a separate 10/100 Ethernet port for a cable or DSL connection that physically separates the local computers from the broadband network. The Skyline Gateway automatically routes traffic from the broadband connection to the appropriate client computers on the local wired or wireless network. The integrated 10/100 switch also optimizes performance when information is transferred between local network devices. The Skyline Wireless Broadband Gateway is configured through a Web-based management system that allows local or remote users to setup the gateway from any device that can run a browser. PPPoE (Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet) and DHCP (Dynamic Host Control Protocol) allow service providers to remotely manage and deliver broadband services. The Skyline Gateway supports DHCP serving and NAT (Network Address Translation) for network management and security. The gateway also supports:
In addition to gateway features, the Skyline Wireless Broadband Gateway is a Wi-Fi-compatible access point that includes support for 64 and 128-bit WEP (Wired Equivalent Protection), and access list security. The Skyline Wireless Broadband Gateway is available for $299. Link: |
