Conexant Systems has unveiled an integrated physical-layer transceiver (PHY) device for the home powerline networking market that enables up to 14 megabits per second networking rates over a home's existing electrical wiring.

The CX11647 is designed to fully support the industry-standard HomePlug 1.0 specification and has been optimized for shared broadband access, low-latency, high-reliability networking in applications including residential gateways and routers, multi-player gaming and entertainment, audio/video streaming, and Internet protocol (IP) telephony.

Conexant's CX11647 transceiver implements the HomePlug 1.0 specification, incorporating intelligent channel adaptation technology for maximum data throughput and connection quality, even in an electrically noisy powerline channel.

This multi-carrier modulation technology, called orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), uses signal-processing techniques that enable the transceiver to "learn" channel conditions and adjust the transmitted signal to obtain the maximum achievable throughput.

Conexant's CX11647 HomePlug 1.0 transceiver also includes such integrated Quality-of-Service (QoS) features as prioritized random access, contention-free access, and segment bursting that further enhance real-time delivery of delay sensitive content, making it well suited for streaming media and IP telephony applications.

The transceiver's IEEE 802.3u-standard Media Independent Interface (MII) can also can be configured as a General Purpose Serial Interface (GPSI) so that the CX11647 device can be paired with virtually any embedded media access controller (MAC) in a variety of information appliances.

The CX11647 HomePlug 1.0 transceiver will sample this month. Volume production is scheduled to commence in the first quarter of calendar year 2002. The device operates on both +2.5 V and +3.3 V power supplies and is packaged in a 144-pin low quad flat pack (LQFP). The Conexant HomePlug 1.0 PHY is priced at $35 in quantities of 1,000 units.
