Philips Semiconductors is now offering a software stack for 3G terminals to enhance its Optimized Philips UMTS Solution (OPUS). This software stack complements its full chipset offering -- Baseband, RF, Power Amplifiers, Power Management Units, and Display Drivers.

Validated as a UMTS-FDD (Frequency Division Duplex) single mode stack, the software interfaces with the existing GSM/GPRS stacks already in volume production. The new OPUS software supports all current standard 2G services, such as SMS and WAP, and includes Universal Subscriber Identity Module (USIM) handling. It is fully scalable, supporting different data rates and service classes from voice up to 384 kbps data, enabling manufacturers to create 3G terminals for a wide range of service requirements. The new software also enables Circuit Switched (CS) and Packet Switched (PS) services, AMR calls, and Internet browsing.

"As the complexity of handset design increases, the combination of hardware, software, and applications requires increased integration and validation efforts," said Oliver Weigelt, 3G/UMTS product marketing manager at Philips Semiconductors. "Philips Semiconductors' new OPUS 3G Software stack will significantly ease the integration at the system level, reducing time-to-market and enabling our customers to focus on their core activities."

The stack is already in field trials and voice and data calls in CS and PS mode have already been successfully established. The OPUS enhanced solution, including the 3G protocol stack, will be available beginning 2002 for full integration with Philips Semiconductors' total cellular offering.
