Insignia Solutions has completed a beta implementation of Jeode technology for the Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME) Connected Device Configuration (CDC)/Foundation Profile and is actively seeking beta customers. Insignia has also completed a three-year licensing agreement with Sun Microsystems that gives Insignia the right to develop and market J2ME products based on the CDC and Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC). This amended agreement expands and supercedes the existing license agreement between the two companies.

"Support of the J2ME platform is integral to our ability to provide our customers with a smooth migration path and key to successfully implementing our mobile wireless initiative," said Richard Noling, chief executive officer of Insignia Solutions. "This updated agreement reflects the deepened and strengthened ties between Insignia and Sun."

The Jeode platform enables Java technology-based functionality on information appliances. It incorporates the Jeode EVM runtime engine, a Sun authorized virtual machine that is fully compatible with the PersonalJava and EmbeddedJava specifications.

Key attributes of the Jeode platform include:

  • Accelerated performance and efficient memory utilization through dynamic adaptive compilation (DAC) and precise, concurrent garbage collection technologies
  • Configurability and tunability to meet the needs of information appliance developers
  • A turn-key software solution already ported and tested on OS/microprocessor combinations
    • Operating systems include: BSDI Unix, ITRON, Linux, Nucleus, pSOS, VxWorks, Windows CE, and Windows NT4
    • Microprocessors include: ARM, Hitachi SH-3 and SH-4, Intel x86, MIPS, PowerPC, and StrongARM.
