REDSonic's RED-Builder 2.0 XE, to be officially released on November 8, 2001, is the most recent version of the RED-Builder tool, an integrated development environment (IDE) that enables developers to customize, configure, and build embedded devices and systems.

The RED-Builder graphical user interface allows developers to choose the modules that they need to customize, configure, and build systems to suit their specific needs. Once users have their systems configured, they can download images to the target application platform and create the applications that they need. After the modules have been selected and a target image has been created, RED-Builder will create an installable root file system on the specified file storage media and transfer the image to the embedded platform.

RED-Builder 2.0 XE also provides a flexible plug-in framework for board support utilities, including download setup, a bootloader, and tools for remote debugging and target connection. With this plug-in framework, RED-Builder 2.0 XE is versatile and able to support the cross development of many different kinds of RISC architectures.
