Wireless LAN (WLAN) capabilities can now be designed into a variety of embedded devices, including industrial automation products, medical monitoring equipment, and consumer networking gear, using Wind River's WindNet 802.11b Device Driver Kit. This WLAN technology can be used for the VxWorks real-time operating system and the Tornado for Home Gateways platform.

WindNet 802.11b provides source code support for 802.11b hardware with enhanced support for Intersil's PRISM II Wi-Fi WLAN chipset. In addition, when combined with Wind River's Tornado for Home Gateways platform, the kit facilitates the development of wireless access points and other WLAN-enabled gateway equipment for the home and small office.

Intersil's PRISM technology, designed to comply with the IEEE's 802.11b standard, takes the complexity out of the design of wireless systems, including wireless local area network links, handheld transceivers, and point-to-point microwave communications systems. The PRISM II WLAN chipset provides a complete solution from antenna to computer bus for 11Mbps WLAN systems.
