All-IP Means Faster, Cheaper Wireless AccessBy Susan Hospod Airvana plans to work with Cisco Systems to deliver an end-to-end, 3G mobile network for wireless operators based entirely on Internet Protocol (IP) standards. In addition, Airvana's All-IP CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Radio Access Network (IP-RAN) infrastructure has successfully completed a suite of interoperability tests with Cisco's Packet Data Serving Node (PDSN). Cisco Systems and Airvana have teamed up to develop an All-IP solution for 3G mobile data networks. Wireless Service Providers will see operating costs reduced by up to 70 percent using an All-IP infrastructure, compared to traditional networking techniques. Other key benefits include increased network scalability and reliability, as well as the ability to realize new revenue streams with innovative, differentiated mobile data services. CDMA2000 1xEV-DO is an always-on technology that enables data to be sent over PCS and cellular wireless networks at speeds comparable to DSL or cable modems and at a cheaper cost per byte than any other 3G technology in development today. CDMA2000 1xEV-DO data rates can reach up to 2.4 Mbps under ideal circumstances, with average sustained rates expected to be around 300 to 600 Kbps, similar to cable modems and DSL. Today's cellular systems typically provide mobile data rates in the range of 14.4 Kbps. The high speeds offered by CDMA2000 1xEV-DO will enhance the wireless experience for not only business users in areas such as mobile Virtual Private Network (VPN) to corporate IP networks, but also for consumers, who will enjoy broadband Internet access, email, instant messaging, audio and video streaming, multi-user gaming, music downloads, digital imaging, and location-based services. Airvana will demonstrate its commercial CDMA2000 1xEV-DO All-IP network at the CDMA Development Group's 2001 CDMA Americas Congress in San Diego starting October 31, 2001. Link: |
