At the Nokia-hosted Mobile Internet Conference in Barcelona, Spain, Nokia unveiled several new devices, including Bluetooth accessories and a Symbian OS-based mobile phone.

Nokia's new 7650 is a 2.5G Symbian OS mobile phone with messaging and imaging capabilities. Featuring a built-in camera, enhanced user interface, and large color display, the Nokia 7650 is based on Symbian OS v6.1. Key features of the Nokia 7650 are its support for GPRS, as well as HSCSD connections, WAP, Bluetooth, SyncML, infrared, email, MIDP Java, and multimedia messaging (MMS).

"The wireless industry has been waiting for a new type of mobile phone to drive home the benefits of advanced data services. The Nokia 7650, based on the advanced, open Symbian OS, heralds the arrival of this next generation of mobile phone and sets a fresh direction for the industry. A world's first in terms of its multimedia messaging capability, the Nokia 7650 is also the first always-connected Symbian OS phone to be squarely targeted at the mass consumer market," said Colly Myers, CEO, Symbian.

The imaging functionality of the Nokia 7650 includes an integrated digital camera with a VGA resolution, picture taking and sending, a photo album for storing pictures, and a large 176 x 208 pixel color display. The MMS works much the same way as SMS messages, but allows users to combine audio, graphic, text, and imaging content in one message. Once the user has selected a picture, written a text, and included an audio clip, a multimedia message can be sent directly to another multimedia messaging-capable terminal, as well as to recipients' email addresses.

The Nokia 7650 will be available in Europe and Asia during Q2, 2002

Nokia also unveiled three new Bluetooth accessories, providing users with cable-free connectivity to their mobile phones. The Nokia Wireless Headset, the Nokia Wireless Car Kit, and the Nokia Connectivity Card are compatible with the latest 1.1 version of the Bluetooth specification and will be available in Europe and Asia in the first quarter, 2002.
