High Speed Internet Uses Digital Television SignalBy Susan Hospod In the first step of a national rollout, Clear Channel Wireless launched a new high-speed Internet service, Delta V, which uses the WKRC-TV digital television signal. Delta V is an Internet accelerator service that works in conjunction with an Internet service provider (ISP) to speed file delivery to the end user. Delta V allows users to keep their current e-mail addresses and ISPs, while adding high-speed download capability to their accounts. The service is provided through digital television signals and translated in the computer through a special PCI card, antenna, and proprietary software Using a latent portion of the digital television signal, Delta V enables home and small business Internet users who cannot get high-speed access to download files from the Internet at 256 kilobits per second (Kbs), up to six times the speed of a normal dial-up connection. Delta V's use of the television signal is especially important to those Internet users whose locations preclude them from high-speed Internet access. Further, the service is not dependent on specific wires or distance requirements. Currently, Delta V is only available in the Cincinnati area. Clear Channel Wireless plans to offer Delta V in television markets throughout the United States in the coming year. Links: |
