Sharp Zaurus PDA Runs on LinuxBy Michael Foley Linux has entered the PDA fray with Sharp Electronics' new multimedia device, the Zaurus SL-5500 Personal Mobile Tool. The Zaurus SL-5500 is a Linux/Java system that provides unique features, such as mobile communications, mobile multimedia, keyboard integration, and dual expansion slots. The PDA runs an embedded Linux OS from Lineo called Embedix. The system's features are comparable to the PocketPC reference design. The Zaurus SL-5500 features a powerful 206MHz processor, 64MB of standard memory, an MP3 and MPEG-1 multimedia player, a voice recorder, a high resolution color screen, and an integrated keyboard. Plus it has two expansion slots, a Compact Flash slot and an SD/Multimedia card slot. The integrated keyboard is located behind a sliding cover. This makes it easier for data entry applications, of course it also adds to the size. Like all PDAs, it includes handwriting recognition and an on-screen keyboard. It also incorporates a high-definition 65,536 color reflective TFT screen with 240 x 320 resolution. Its Linux OS runs Java and provides a Qt Embedded GUI. The Zaurus SL-5500 also comes equipped with software, including address book, calendar, calculator, text editor, to do list, and Word and Excel viewing and editing capabilities. It also provides PC synchronization with Outlook. The device comes complete with a docking station that features an integrated USB cable, A/C adapter, and serial port for easy synchronization. Included are MP3 and MPEG-1 capabilities for multimedia applications. Link: |
