Quantum introduced the Snap Server 1100, a Network Attached Storage (NAS) appliance that provides up to 80GB of reliable storage in a portable, desktop configuration. The Snap Server 1100 is optimized for fast file serving performance, quick throughput, and increased functionality and manageability through Java technology. The Snap Server 1100 may be the smallest customizable application-specific appliance on the market.

The new Snap Server 1100 boasts nearly 70 percent faster throughput and 50 percent faster response time than its predecessor, the Snap Server 1000. Like all Snap Server products, the Snap Server 1100 delivers full, multi-platform file sharing in mixed Windows, NetWare, UNIX, Linux and Macintosh environments.

Powered by the new Snap Operating System (OS) v3.4, the Snap Server 1100 offers participation in Microsoft Windows 2000 Active Directory environments. The Snap OS v3.4 also offers AppleShare network users compatibility with the newest Mac OS X v10.1.2 and UNIX NFS users group-level security and management. The new Snap OS v3.4 also brings Java technology onto the Snap Server 1100, allowing customers to run applications such as Quantum's Server-to-Server Synchronization software. The introduction of the Snap Server 1100 demonstrates Quantum's commitment to delivering innovative data protection solutions with improved price and performance for varying storage needs and budgets.

Key features of the new Snap Server 1100 include:

- 80GB or 40GB Storage - Compact, portable form factor - 100Base-TX/10Base-T Ethernet connectivity - Centralized management through SNMP - Remote monitoring and management - Cross-platform file sharing support x) - User-, share- and file-level security - Java applications shell - Powered by Snap OS v3.4 optimized for NAS

Quantum Offers Additional Management and Functionality for NAS A key development to enhance the network backup capabilities of the Snap Server is Quantum's Server-to-Server Synchronization software. This optional software package, which utilizes Java technology on the Snap Server, copies content directly from one or more source Snap Servers to one or more target Snap Servers on the network. Server-to-Server Synchronization can be used to migrate data to other Snap Servers on the network at scheduled times, making it ideal for a variety of business situations.

Users can schedule copies without slowing network performance, and in the case of a primary server failure, can quickly and easily retrieve necessary data from Snap Server targets. Quantum also offers Snap Server DiskXtender® Appliance Edition (DX AE), which offers customers a simple, cost-effective package for managing data storage by consolidating and centralizing distributed network data into a virtual storage pool. In addition to DX AE, Quantum offers Snap Server EmailXtender(TM) Archive (EX/A) software, which simplifies the management of e-mail servers, optimizes e-mail server performance, increases productivity for end users and reduces IT administration costs. Snap Server EX/A is available for both Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Notes/Domino servers and is quickly and easily deployed.

The Snap Server 1100 is available at an MSRP of $549 for 40GB and $849 for 80GB, including a standard two-year warranty. A third-year extension to the standard warranty is available. Snap OS v3.4 Optimized for NAS Appliances
