Palm Unveils New Web Browser

Simpler is isn't allways better. Palm, abandoning their initial strategy of connectivity through web-clipping, Palm has introduced a full web-browsing option for Palm handheld computers. Dubbed the Palm Web Browser. This full-featured HTML browser gives users of Internet-enabled Palm m125, m130, m500, m505, m515 and i705 handhelds the ability to access any URL on the Internet, bookmark and categorize favorite sites, easily save information for offline viewing, and cache a history of visited sites. Users can do all this whether they are connected to the Internet wirelessly or via a modem.

The Palm Web Browser is scheduled to be available in the United States and Europe in April. The estimated U.S. street price is $19.95. It will be available for purchase and download online at The Palm Store.

Sophisticated compression technology in the Palm Web Browser downloads text quickly, so users can search and read information while multiple graphics continue to load from a page. Optimized web pages provide the ability to view any URL on the Internet and display web content to the appropriate size of the Palm handheld screen. Caching enables users to capture online information, such as a customized map or a specific news article, and save it for viewing offline.

The full browser supports legacy web clipping applications, the Palm Web Browsers enables mobile professionals to create a library of their favorite applications that they can be accessed wirelessly. There are more than 600 applications available that quickly deliver targeted information to the user's wireless handheld. Easy-to-use web navigation features familiar browser buttons, including Back, Forward, Refresh and History. In addition, the ability to create and categorize bookmarks enables users to keep track of their favorite sites. The Palm Web Browser is localized in English, French, Italian, German, Spanish and Japanese.

The Palm Web Browser is available for wirelessly enabled Palm devices, the m125, m130, m500, m505, m515 and i705 handhelds. or can be used on other Palm handhelds with an external wireless modem. It does require a wireless Internet access account to be capable of full browsing on the Palm devices.
