Microsoft Extends .NET to Mobile DevicesBy Michael Foley Microsoft is releasing the beta version of its .NET Compact Framework. This platform extends the Web Services provided by .NET to the mobile and embedded space. The .NET Compact Framework is Microsoft's application platform technology that encompasses XML Web services for devices based on Windows CE. As a subset of the .NET Framework, the .NET Compact Framework shares the same programming model and application development tools. Microsoft also announced beta availability of the Smart Device Extensions (SDE) for Visual Studio .NET, an extension to the Visual Studio .NET integrated development environment (IDE) that targets the .NET Compact Framework. The SDE provides new project types, device emulator support, remote debugging support and automatic deployment. The .NET Compact Framework aligns embedded programming in the same domain as desktop development by unifying the programming model, integrating XML Web services support, enterprise-class data access using ADO.NET and XML, and reuseable class libraries Link: |
