Intel Corporation demonstrates its Intel Media Center Reference Design. This reference design intended to help hardware and software developers accelerate the development and production of powerful, scaleable, interactive consumer products that integrate the capabilities of a number of previously discrete devices.

The Intel Media Center Reference Design, based on an Intel Celeron processor, includes hardware and software to support multiple audio and video applications, content and back-end systems. Products based on the design will provide broadband Internet access, DVD playback, personal video recording, interactive gaming, TV reception, MP3 audio, content storage, video on demand and home networking in a single device.

Schematics for the Intel Media Center Reference Design will be available for download in late May. Intel is committed to supporting solutions based on Intel architecture for this emerging consumer product category and will provide additional reference designs that further the connected digital home.

The design supports Intel Celeron and Pentium III processors ranging from 300 MHz to 1 GHz providing scalability and headroom to support additional a variety of applications and functions.

The Intel Media Center Reference Design uses key technologies from a number of contributing companies, including hard drives from Maxtor, display components from Focus Enhancements, and video decoder components from Sigma Designs. These components are linked together via an embedded Linux-based operating system developed by TUXIA. The reference design is also supported by the Microsoft Windows XP Embedded and Windows CE.net operating systems.
