MontaVista, ELT and Nexterm Linux Based Internet Terminal

MontaVista Software and two Japanese firms, Nexterm Inc. and ELT Inc., have jointly developed an advanced thin-client terminal based on Linux. The Nexterm SE is a lightweight micro-client that executes all terminal applications in a server-based computing environment.

Thin-client terminals are perfect for businesses in which similar tasks are repeated by multiple users and the degree of PC usage is relatively low. Such applications include call centers, sales offices, schools, franchises, hotel guestrooms, banks, libraries, hospitals and ticket box offices.

Nexterm SE product specifications include an Intel Strong ARM 32Bit RISC processor running at 206MHz, 32MB of SDRAM, 16MB of Intel Strata Flash, extendable to 128MB through a flash memory smart media card interface. It comes with 16 bit Stereo audio and a 1024x768 24 bit true color display.

The software included MontaVista Linux, the First View Browser, an E-mail client. Nextterm SE works with Windows 2000 Server Terminal Service, Windows NT4.0 Terminal Server Edition, Citrix WinFrame and Citrix MetaFrame.

Communications is through a Ethernet 10BaseT via TCP/IP with DNS, DHCP, PPP networking protocol support. Also supported are Citrix ICA protocols. The device comes with 1 serial port an IrDA port, 2 USB ports, a PS/2 keyboard and a mouse.
