Santa Clara, Ca. -- Joining forces Integrated Device Technology and MontaVista Software have developed jointly a version of the latter's Linux Professional Edition OS to support IDT's RC32334 integrated communications processor in embedded networking applications including edge switches, gateways and wireless access points.

The OS and processor are packaged together in a 79S334 evaluation board to be provided by both companies.

Based on the 32-bit MIPS instruction set architecture (ISA), the RC32334 is a system-on-a-chip (SOC) solution that operates at up to 150 MHz and features an on-chip, industry-standard PCI bridge operating at up to 66 MHz; a flexible memory controller; and standard general-purpose system modules including a DMA controller, interrupt controller and serial ports. The 79S334 evaluation board has multiple PCI slots to allow a variety of off-the-shelf peripherals, such as Ethernet cards, to be used in system design and debug.

MontaVista Linux Professional Edition 2.1, is based on the Linux kernel version 2.4.17, and targets 24 processors supporting 68 COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) and reference boards. It provides native Linux real-time performance with the company's pre-emptible kernel and real-time scheduler and is available as part of a subscription package that includes a royalty-free embedded operating system; development tools for prototyping, building, scaling, testing and deploying a design; a choice of development hosts, and access to the MontaVista Zone -- a customer web portal and access to Embedded Linux training classes.
