Eclipse Launches Open-Source Research Project

Ottawa, Ontario -- The Eclipse community has established theEclipse Technology Project, an open-source project that supports research, education and engineering initiatives designed to integrate a wide variety of leading edge computing technologies with the Eclipse Platform.

It is being complemented by IBM's Eclipse Fellowship Program, which funds university based research in the areas of programming languages, tools, and environments, complements this effort. All Eclipse Fellowship projects use the Eclipse Platform as a foundation to conduct their research.

The Eclipse platform is a Java-based, but open source and royalty-free web-oriented IDE that provides a universal platform for tools integration irrespective of target platform or application, server, desktop, embedded or small footprint iappliance. A multi-programming language, multi-platform, multi-vendor environment, Eclipse is a plug-in based framework for creating, integrating and using software development tools.
