Palo Alto, Ca. -- Symantec Corp. continues to broaden its security horizons beyond simple virus detection utilities with the introduction of an intrusion-detection and prevention product line.

Called ManHunt, it integrates recently acquired Recourse Technologies' ManHunt technology with Symantec's server based Host Intrusion Detection 4.0.

It is designed to be a network-based intrusion detection system that detects protocol anomalies for both known and unknown attacks; signature detection with support for custom signatures; and analysis of behavioral anomalies. It operates at speeds up to 2G bps.

In addition, ManHunt can contain an attack and initiate other actions required for incident response.

Symantec Host IDS 4.0 provides real time monitoring and detection, as well as response to security breaches. When a system is threatened, Symantec Host IDS notifies administrators with alarms and takes countermeasures according to company security policies.

The company is also introducing a related new product, ManTrap, which provides early warnings for unauthorized access and misuse detection.

ManHunt and ManTrap are available now. Symantec Host IDS 4.0 is scheduled for mid-October shipment. Symantec Host IDS 4.0 pricing starts at $995 per server; ManHunt pricing starts at $12,250. ManTrap starts at $7,500.
