NewLogic claims single-chip 802.11 “solution”

Lustinau, Austria --- NewLogic Technologies AG, a supplier of circuit core intellectual property for the Bluetooth wireless LAN, claims to have developed the technology for a single-chip wireless LAN node, including RF circuitry, and covering both the 802.11a and 802.11b standards.

The company is making its move under the WiLD market brand, which it said builds on its BOOST Bluetooth offerings.

"We are proud that once again NewLogic has been the trendsetter in the WLAN-IP market with a complete single chip WLAN solution. The WiLD IP covers all standards (802.11a/b/g) and all extensions (802.11e/h/i), with the MAC, the modems, the RF-CMOS radio and all system parts", said Michel Eftimakis, principal wireless systems engineer and WiLD hardware project leader of NewLogic.

Eftimakis appears to state that NewLogic's "solution" is a complete single-chip multi-standard wireless LAN transceiver. The company did not discuss if, or where, individual circuit blocks had been taken to silicon.

The first standard is a wireless LAN that operates on a carrier frequency at about 5-GHz while the latter operates in the license-free industrial, scientific and medical band at 2.4-GHz frequency.

The licensable and silicon-independent 802.11a/b/g MAC core includes protocol software, the company said. The core can be combined with the modem cores of the WiLD family or with a third party modem core. The WiLD 802.11a/b/g MAC is also the industry's most complete platform, with the lowest gate-count and lowest power consumption, the company claimed.

"With the availability of the WiLD family, NewLogic has taken the lead in the market for wireless connectivity IP", said Hans-Peter Metzler, president and chief executive officer of NewLogic, in a statement. "The success of WiLD demonstrates that it was exactly the right move to further expand our R&D operations, especially in the field of RF-CMOS, which is the key enabler for single chip solutions."
