Conexant Intros Low Power MPEG-2 EncoderBy Bernard Cole Newport Beach, Ca. -- Conexant Systems Inc. has introduced a new low power MPEG-2 audio/video encoder that incorporates the functionality of up to three different chips in a single device. The hopes that it will enable designers to improve video quality while simplifying their designs and reducing manufacturing costs. The IC is destined for deployment in set-top boxes, personal video recorders, digital video disc players and PCs. The CX23416 consumes 550 milliwatts of power in full operation, and 1 milliwatt of power in standby mode. The new device also features increased motion search range, the de-coupling of motion estimation from encoding, and an adaptive quantization scheme. Also included are pre-filtering improvements that include built-in noise filters designed to dynamically improve images in the pre-processing stage while reducing elementary stream bit rates. In addition, the available software support for the CX23416 includes an on-chip API function call layer and binary and source code examples. Sampling in a 233-BGA package, the CX23416 MPEG-2 encoder is priced at $21 each in OEM quantities, with volume production scheduled for November of 2002. Evaluation boards are also available.
