Toshiba Wireless Cable Modem Eliminates Routers

(10/22/02, 03:05:28 PM EDT)

Irvine, Ca. -- A new cable modem from Toshiba America Information Systems' Network Products Division may eliminate the need for small business and SOHO users to elimnate the need to install a router as the front end access point to the Internet.

Toshbia NPD's PCX5000 DOCSIS Wireless Cable Modem Gateway, in addition to supporting CableLabs' Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) certified cable modem, also has Wi-Fi certification from the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA).

Because of that dual functionality it can be used automatically to all 802.11b-capable PCs and small footprint computing iappliances in range -- no extra router needed. A built in 4-port switch hooks up to any Ethernet-based network cards.

The PCX5000 has been qualified by the Microsoft Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL) as compatible with all Windows operating systems.

The router/gateway functionality also includes security: the VPN-1/FireWall-1 solution from Check Point Software Technologies, and Safe@, a software program by Check Point owned SofaWare.
