Qualcomm samples Multimedia 3G handset

San Diego, Ca. -- Qualcomm Inc. has begun shipping its multimedia-capable MSM6100 Mobile Station Modem (MSMô) chipset and system software, built using an ARM926EJ-S CPU.

The MSM6100 chipset and system software incorporate the company's Launchpad suite software enhancements enabling digital camera phones with support for JPEG compression and a dedicated camera module interface. The Launchpad suite also provides streaming MPEG-4 video decoding at 15 frames per second and enables the creation of video-clip e-mail messages using the integrated MPEG-4 encoder and camera module interface.

In addition, the Launchpad suite offers MP3 audio decoding, a 2D/3D graphics accelerator for advanced gaming applications, Compact Media Extension PC-quality MIDI synthesizer, Bluetooth capability to enable wireless connectivity between digital devices, MMC removable storage capability for convenient storing of data such as MP3 music or digital maps, and an enhanced LCD interface.

Also offered as part of Launchpad suite of applications is an integrated position-location technology and a compass interface.

The MSM6100 supports the company's Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless (BREW) Application Programming Interface (API).
