TI first to license new ARM11 cores for iappliancesBy Bernard Cole Dallas, Texas -- Texas Instruments Inc. has licenses the two just released ARM CPU for next generation wireless, data and multimedia iappliance devices. The company plans to use the two new cores, the ARM1136J-STM and the ARM1136JF-STM with TI's own DSP cores to increase performance and extend battery life for 2.5 and 3G wireless handsets and PDAs. The new ARM solutions are the first microprocessor core implementations of the ARM11 microarchitecture, which is based on the ARMv6 instruction set developed in collaboration by TI and ARM. The ARM11 microarchitecture features a high-performance pipeline and high-bandwidth level-one memory system, which results in an extremely compact and power-efficient microprocessor core. These new features, which will be code-compatible with TI´s current ARM® core-based solutions, coupled with TI´s wireless experience and DSP engines, will offer the increased performance and low power consumption required to run real-time audio and video applications. Go to www.ti.com or www.arm.com for information on these new cores. For more information about the issues, products and technologies in this story, go to the iAppliance Web Views page and call up the associatively-linked XML/Java Web map of the iApplianceWeb site and search for product information since the beginning of 2002. |
