Mindspeed's Chagall SoC: single chip VoIP PBX

Newport Beach, Ca. -- Hoping to change fundamentally the economics of deploying the new voice over IP telecommunications standard, Conexant Systems, Inc.'s Mindspeed Technologies subsidiary has developed a since chip packet private branch exchange (PBX) on a single chip for enterprise and residential telephony equipment.

Designated the Chagall M825xx silicon PBX (SiPBX), it is a complement to the the companies M82610 processor that bridges wireless & wireline networks for voice transport.

It integrates signaling, encryption, packet processing and signal processing functions, handling up to 64 channels of highly compressed packet voice on a single chip. Software bundled with the device, developed and tested to carrier class standards, provides the full range of wireline voice codecs.

The M825xx SiPBX combines a fifth-generation DSP core soft encryption engine, programmable packet processor and a user-programmable high-performance embedded host controller.

It supports a wide variety of telephony and packet signaling protocols including SIP, H.323 and H.248. The voice processing subsystem runs up to 64 channels of carrier-class G.7xx codecs and echo cancellation, supporting packet-to-TDM, packet-to-packet, and TDM-to-TDM operation for up to 512 subscriber lines.

The chip also incorporates a low-latency payload encryption engine supporting a wide range of industry standard ciphers, from RC2 to 3DES.

The device is targeted at a wide range of platfoms including voice and media gateways for Enterprise and multi-tenant unit (MTU); wireless base transceiver stations (BTSs); base station controllers (BSCs) and mobile switching centers (MSCs); digital loop carriers (DLCs); Class 4 and 5 switches; integrated access devices (IADs); IP routers; IP PBX systems; and remote access concentrators (RACs).

The M825xx SiPBX system solution is available now in sample quantities in three configurations: the M82530, 64-channel G.7xx, the M82520, 32-channel G.7xx, and the M82510, 16-channel G.7xx. Pricing begins at $139 per unit in OEM volumes of 10,000.
