San Jose, Ca. – Capitalizing on the growing demand for low cost mass storage appliances, Jungo Software Technologies, Inc., and StorLink Semiconductors, Inc., have just introduced an integrated software and hardware reference design targeted at OEMs and ODMs designing Home, SOHO and SMB NAS systems.

The reference design, which combines Jungo’s OpenRG software suite and Storlink’s  Centroid system on chip storage router IC, is designed to allow  vendors to bring to market competitive NAS devices in less then 3 months from early stages of design into mass production.

The Centroid System-on-a-Chip (SoC) NAS Router device integrates a 32-bit ARM9 RISC Processor with over 225MIPS onto the same chip with two IDE Controllers for direct interface with hard drive, CD-RW and DVD-RW; a full featured hardware accelerated security engine; and a 66MHz 32-bit PCI interface.

It also incorporates a 10/100 Ethernet MAC, an USB interface for printer sharing, a Real Time Clock for system management, an UART port for modem connection, and a LPC interface for parallel printer or a Super IO chipset connection. In addition, Centroid supports the cost effective DDR SDRAM memory.

OpenRG is a scalable suite of software technologies that provides customer premise equipment (CPE) vendors with the infrastructure needed to bring to market Home, SOHO and SMB gateways.

It includes an optimized Linux-based operating system, optional VxWorks support, communication and routing protocols, network security (Stateful Packet Inspection Firewall), wireless LAN security (802.1x, RADIUS client, WPA) Virtual Private Networking (VPN), Universal Plug and Play, web-based management, remote upgrade capabilities, support for CableHome 1.1-based devices and a wide range of home networking applications.

According to Ofer Vilenski, Jungo's Chief Executive Officer, NAS devices based on the new Jungo/StorLink solution will provide advanced functionality including certified firewall and VPN, hardware encryption engine, secure wireless connectivity, print server and file server functionality supporting dynamic storage recognition, FAT32/ext2/ext3 disk formatting, FAT32/ext2/FAT12/FAT16 disk mounting, graphic display of storage device on network map, partition table administration, error detection and repair utilities and friendly user administration via web based management.

"The first generation of consumer/SMB networked storage came to being with standalone NAS boxes,” said Jeremey Donovan, Chief Analyst at Gartner Dataquest. “Home users are demanding solutions to share and secure their photos and other media files. SMBs see the appeal of a lower-cost, easier to manage alternative to using low-end servers for simple file sharing".

"The future generation brings the very real prospect of converging storage functionality with network routing and firewall with benefits that extend from lower-cost to simplified management to a smaller footprint".
