First Look: Xcerion's 'icloud' marries remote, local computing

Linkoping, Sweden – Taking the next step in the creation of its XML-based Internet operating system, Xcerion AB has formally named it the “icloud.”

Available now in beta form, icloud joins a number of so-called Web operating systems, colloquially called “WebTops,” including DesktopTwo, goowy, eyeOS, G.ho.st, Ultero, and YouOS.

Web operating systems aim to replicate the local desktop computing experience from within a Web browser. Where icloud differs is that it aims to achieve this using an XML-based architecture.

Unlike WebTop systems that run applications on remote servers, icloud relies on an XML Virtual Machine for local (and offline) operation. As a result, it combines the advantages of remote computing -- a central point for software distribution, storage and updates -- with the advantages of local computing -- execution speed and user control without a bandwidth bottleneck.

In addition, icloud offers what Xcerion is calling "gesture-based computing." " Gesture-based computing is essentially real-time content sharing that allows icloud users to drag and drop documents from their computer to a friend's computer in real-time, as if they two machines were dual monitors powered by a single machine.

Another difference between icloud and other WebTop systems is that the latter is aimed at re-inventing the economics of software development.

icloud will come with the standard set of productivity applications (word processing, a calendar, a presentation tool, and the like).

Unlike other WebTop developers, including Microsoft, Xcerion AB is not doing this for the money, and plans to make the system free to the general public.
