Paris, France – The European Union has funded a pan-European conglomerate of 21 industrial partners, media content providers and research institutes to conduct a four-year research project aiming to develop a 'next generation' Internet TV distribution system based on peer-to-peer (P2P) and social interaction.

The objective of the P2P-Next project is to develop a platform that takes open source development, open standards and future proof iterative integration as key design principles.

The P2P-Next project has an open approach towards sharing results. Its initiators claim all core software technology will be available as open source, enabling new business models. P2P-Next will also address challenges related to content delivery over the Internet, including technical, legal, regulatory, security, business and commercial issues.

Eventually, project members said the P2P-Next Project is set to extend the notion of a conventional media distribution network. It introduces a concept of on-demand, personalized and social network.

P2P-Next involves 21 partners in 12 different countries, including the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Delft University of Technology, the University of Rome, the European Broadcasting Union, the University of Lancaster, the University Politehnica of Bucharest, Markenfilm, STMicroelectronics, Pioneer and VTT Technical Research Center of Finland.
