Compaq iPAQ Music Center

by

Think PCs when you hear Compaq? Well, don't anymore! Compaq is entering the music scene with the release of its iPAQ Music Center. The iPAQ Music Center is a digital jukebox that stores and plays music, including Internet radio. Unlike many devices on the market, the Music Center is stand-along device and doesn't require a PC to download music.

Compaq iPAQ Music Center

The iPAQ Music Center is based on the OpenGlobe IDAC reference design, which includes a 266 MHz embedded IBM Power PC processor core. It has a 20 GB hard drive, which stores over 400 audio CDs or 5,000 individual songs in MP3 format, and a built-in, read-only CD drive. Internet radio can be played on the Music Center by connecting online directly with its built-in 56K modem or via a PC using HomePNA networking for connection.

Are you stuck in the 20th century? The unit is designed to hook up with your existing stereo equipment and allows you to record cassettes, LPs, or, yes, even 8-tracks, to its hard drive. Specifically, it has analog stereo RCA jacks input and output, as well as digital co-ax and optical input and output. It also comes equipped with three USB ports for attaching peripherals including MP3 players and USB keyboards.

The iPAQ Music Center will fit in well with your stereo equipment, measuring 17 x 11.56 x 3.69 inches and weighing 12 pounds. Its full-function remote control interfaces with your TV, stereo, and S-Link compatible CD players. The device has a two-line, 20 character VFD display, but uses its Visual Music Guide, an on-screen TV menu, for organizing and identifying songs and creating customized playlists. The Visual Music Guide is powered by OpenGlobe Entertainment Services, which delivers customized entertainment content, music recommendations and Internet radio from a touch of a button on the remote.

Pricing and Availability

The Compaq iPAQ Music Center is priced at $799 and is currently available online and through selected retailers. While supplies last, Compaq will throw in a Compaq Personal Audio Player PA-1 with purchase of the iPAQ Music Center.
