NEC MobilePro 790

by

Why not get your PC a companion, like the NEC MobilePro 790 Professional PC Companion? It's much more than a date for your PC, its a friend for you when you're out of the office. The MobilePro 790 can go practically anywhere with you, and you can use it to work on spreadsheets, presentations, documents, or emails when you're on the go. When you get back to the office, a quick rendezvous between the MobilePro 790 and your PC will assuage any of your PC's concerns that you've been cheating on it.

MobilePro 790

While certainly not as fast as your office computer, the 168 MHz NEC Vr4121 processor should be perfectly suitable for out-of-office computing needs. And the suite of pre-installed software, including Microsoft Pocket Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, Internet Explorer, and InkWriter, won't leave you hanging when you have some critical business matter you have to take care of. Just in case, though, the MobilePro 790 is also equipped with the internal flash ROM BSQUARE bUSEFUL Backup Plus configuration utility. Running on Microsoft Windows for Handheld PC 2000, the MobilePro 790 also includes Microsoft Terminal Server Client software.

Chances are you won't be doing just work on this device, so to ensure that you will be able to stay entertained, NEC has included Solitaire, Windows Media Player, an audio jack for earphone or microphone additions, and multiple ways for you to get online. An internal controllerless V.90 modem and RJ-11 telephone cable can get you up and surfing if you are in another office environment, but if you must go wireless, you have the choice of using a Type II PC Card slot or Type II CompactFlash card slot to add a wireless modem card. Of course, these can also be used for memory or program additions, but what is the fun in that?

If memory is on your mind, you should be fairly happy with the MobilePro 790's retention capabilities. Remember, this is a handheld device, so you won't find the space you would normally see on a PC, but 24 MB ROM, 32 MB RAM, and 16 MB internal flash ROM should get the job done.

Data input and navigation on the MobilePro 790 is via either the 78-key QWERTY keyboard or the touchscreen. The 8.1 inch diagonal DSTN touchscreen shows 64K colors at a resolution of 640 x 240. If you hook the handheld up to an external monitor via the VGA out port, it will produce a resolution of 800 x 600.

Overall, the MobilePro 790 measures 9.6 x 5.2 x 1.1 inches and weighs about 1.8 lbs. Not too bad when you compare it to that clunky computer sitting on your desk, is it?
