Origami

by

Imagine, if you will, a device that can shoot a short digital movie and then wirelessly transmit it to a nearby computer or device using Bluetooth. Then consider using that same device to listen to MP3s or surf the Internet. And then think about looking up your daily schedule or a phone number so you can connect for a conference call -- video, if need be -- with the same device. If you're able to imagine this, perhaps you'll come up with a device that looks a bit like the device below - the Origami from National Semiconductor.

Origami

Just like paper origami, which can turn one sheet of paper into many different objects, the Origami from National Semiconductor uses folding and repositioning to morph one piece of hardware into different devices: a digital camera, video camcorder, smartphone, MP3 audio player, PDA, Internet access device, Internet picture frame, email device, or video conferencing terminal. That is taking the ancient Japanese art far beyond folding paper.

With all of the neat functions and different form factors, possibly the most amazing aspect of the Origami is the fact that it runs on Microsoft Windows XP Embedded. One of the first, if not the first, devices introduced that is based on the newest Microsoft OS, the Origami utilizes National's Geode SC3200 processor to perform all of these amazing functions. The body of the device is equipped with a CMOS camera, a 4 inch TFT LCD touchscreen, and a mini keyboard.

Because connectivity is such a large part of a device that can do so many things, the Origami has several options, including Bluetooth, USB, CompactFlash, and an option for 802.11. About the size and weight of a small digital camcorder, the Origami weighs in at 10.3 oz and measures 7.6 x 3.8 x 1.3 inches.

Pricing and availability

The National Origami is a proof-of-concept device for OEMs.
